Irish Soda Bread

Irish Soda Bread is an easy quick bread that can be made and enjoyed anytime. The following is a recipe that includes golden raisins - a little gold for St. Patrick's day. You can omit the raisins completely or substitute regular raisins, currents or dried cranberries or a combination instead. We've tried them all and they were well received by everyone. Children love to help! Depending on their age they can measure, dump, mix, stir, kneed and/or form the rustic loaf. When children join you in the kitchen they are excited to try out the results. This is a great activity for the whole family and the bread makes a lovely gift for family, friends or neighbors.


Ingredients:

• 3 3/4 C of flour
• 1/4 C brown sugar
• 1 T baking powder
• 1 t baking soda
• 3/4 C golden raisins
• 2 C of buttermilk
• 1 egg

Preparation:     

1. Allow the oven to heat up to 375 degrees.
2. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
3. Place the flour into a large mixing bowl.
4. Dump in the brown sugar, baking powder and baking soda and toss to combine well.
5. Fold in the raisins until incorporated into the dry mixture well.
6. Pour the buttermilk into a separate small bowl.
7. Break the egg into the buttermilk and whisk until completely combined.
8. Pour the mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until all the ingredients are incorporated together and soft dough has formed.
9. Flour a flat surface lightly and transfer the dough to the surface.
10. Knead the dough 10 times or until the dough is pliable and smooth.
11. Form the dough into a large mounded round.
12. Place the dough on the prepared cookie sheet and use a sharp knife to cut a shallow X in the middle of the mound.
13. Bake the bread for 45 minutes or until browned on top and a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Communication Tips for Families and Nannies

Whether the job is going well or there are issues, good communication is essential between the employer and the nanny.  Obviously it’s much easier to communicate all the positives – how much you appreciate them, how the children enjoy them, how good it feels to leave the house knowing all is well, how much you enjoy your job, how great the family is, the latest fun activity or humorous comment from one of the children – these are the kind of comments that are easy to share.  It’s when there are issues that the need for effective open communication skills is essential.

Avoiding conversations about issues of concern is not a good approach.  Nothing can change in a situation unless dialogue is begun.  Nannies are great at teaching these concepts to the children in their care, but not always the best at communicating with their employers.  Certainly the personal nature of a nanny position is part of the challenge.  Employers often need to open that door.

Consider the following tips in effective communication with each other:

St. Patricks Day Activities

We loved activities, crafts, recipes, games  for St. Patricks Day! It was more than one day we stretched it out over a week or more with at least one new activity planned each day. Story time was always exciting during this time. We always made Shamrock Shakes and Irish Soda Bread. Update on INA Scholarship Offering

Nanny Groups Honor One of their Own by Sponsoring INA Conference Scholarship

Local nanny group, Twin Cities Professional Nannies (TCPN) and former members of the National Association of Nannies (NAN) have come together to establish a scholarship to the 2012 International Nanny Association (INA) annual conference. This scholarship honors nanny, Lori Baker who was a member of NAN, TCPN and INA. Lori was killed in her home a few days after Christmas. Establishing this scholarship allows those who knew Lori and the whole nanny community, to honor her memory.

Lori was a dedicated nanny, child advocate and a leader in the local nanny industry. She served on the Board of Directors of TCPN for many years heading up the Playgroups Committee and working on the annual conference. Lori always gave 100% to anything she was doing.

Her commitment to her nanny employers was exemplary. Lori had been with her current family for nine years. She was devoted to the whole family, providing them with not only quality child care but support for the entire family. They were equally devoted to Lori.

Beyond her commitment to being a professional career nanny Lori loved to be active in her community and loved being outdoors. She was an animal lover and a cat owner. Lori loved to scrapbook, make her own cards and sew. She was an amazing friend to all - although she seemed quiet at first her friends discribe her as lively and great fun! She will be missed by many.

Lori Baker Memorial Scholarship

In honor and memory of Lori Baker, a board member of the Twin Cities Professional Nannies (TCPN) and a former member of the now defunct National Association of Nannies(NAN) we (the former members of NAN and current members of TCPN) would like to join together and offer a scholarship to the 2012 INA Conference.
Requirements:

• Only former members of NAN and current members of TCPN are eligible for the Lori Baker Scholarship.
• A working nanny who currently works in the field at least 24 hours a week.
• Never attended an INA Conference First time attendees or those who have previously attended
• You must be a member of INA as of March 9, 2012
• By submitting this essay you are committing to attend the 2012 INA Conference. ( INA Board of Directors, conference speakers and workshop presenters, conference sponsors who receive complimentary registration, the 2011 and 2012 INA Nanny of the Year award recipients are not eligible)

* Submit an essay on the following topic: “What my professional nanny connections mean to me”

• Essay must be between 300-500 words.
• Do not include information in your essay that would identify you, such as the name of your city. We would like to keep the submissions as anonymous as possible.
• Essay must be submitted between Wednesday February 22, 2012 and Friday March 9, 2012 11:59pm EST.
• Be a professional. Recipient will be chosen by content and presentation of essay. Use spell check and count your words.
• Award recipient will be notified via phone and email on Monday, March 12, 2012.
